It is always a sad moment when you hear about the passing of a screen legend, even if you are largely unfamiliar with his work there is no doubting the impact Paul Newman had on the movie business, arguably (along with Steve McQueen) creating the concept of the Hollywood mega-star as we know it today. I am largely acquainted with Newman’s better known works but I am ashamed to say that my knowledge of his films extends little beyond these select few. From Butch Cassidy to Hud and from Cool Hand Luke to The Verdict Newman has commanded the screen in every film I have been privileged enough to watch him in, his piercing blue eyes burning through the screen in a way any other actor would dream about (even in the black and white Hustler!). For those unfamiliar with Newman I would recommend you acquaint yourself with one of the most charismatic actors of our generation as soon as possible. He will be sorely missed.
